It's the Christmas season. There are play practices, gift exchanges, semester tests, travel plans, company parties, extra baking, and shopping, lots of shopping.
Now is the time to remember who is in charge, Psalms 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Let go of your troubles and worries - give them to God to handle. The God who created the moon, stars, the earth and each of us; can handle our everyday crisies. If we'd just let go!
As Jesus became better and better known, he sought his heavenly Father in solitude.See Matthew 14:23,you may want to read verses 13-33 to see what was going on; then look up Mark 1:29-35 (Jesus heals many and then prays in a solitary place) and of course Luke 22:41(praying alone at the mount of olives). As we celebrate Christ's birth, let's learn from his example. Quiet time with God is good for all of us especially when we get busy and stressed out. Seek out your Heavenly Father, refresh yourself with quiet one on one time with Him.
Another memory verse for you: "The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear?The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalms 27:1 Keep Jesus as your guiding star this season and always; and just keep reading that Bible.

Rules,rules, rules!
People say we have lots of rules, but are they God's rules or man's? In Mark 7:7 Jesus speaks of rules taught by men, "They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men." We must be careful what we teach. We need to know and understand the why for some rules.
Jesus was a rule breaker. He healed on the Sabbath(Luke 6:1-11)ate with tax collectors(Luke 19:1-10), even invited one to be his disciple(Mark 2:14-17), and spoke to a Samaritan woman of questionable character(John 4:1-26).
The rules Jesus broke were meant to keep man from straying away from God. But God has perfect rules, man just has a way of adding to them. Sometimes the more we try to explain or make clear what God intended, the more damage we do to His message.Remember Micah 6:8? If you don't, here it is: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
God wants a relationship. He wants your heart. Here is your memory verse from John 4:24

Power of the Word
We'll start off with Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double edged sword...".There's more to this verse, I want you to look it up and learn it. It's talking about the whole word of God; but believe me I know a single word from God can be very powerful.
This is one of those weeks full of stress for me--lots of things to do in many different areas. I find myself asking "How will it all get taken care of?" Well we all get there sometimes-- where you've forgotten Who is in charge. God is big enough to handle it all! In the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5) Jesus told us all to stop worrying about clothes and food. God cares! You just need to do what you can, and He'll do the rest. No, we don't succeed at everything we try; but God is there for us when we fail too, and that's enough.
I have been blessed with a name that reminds me God is constant, never failing and never gone. You see little ones tend to pronounce my name Always. My favorite verse using that word is Matthew 28:20 "Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you, And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Because I had that as a memory verse long ago, all it took to make me stop worrying the other day was to hear a little toddler tell me "byebye Always!" I remembered God is with me always.
Keep reading those Bibles and memorize some of it. You never know God might have a one word message for you too.

Teach your children
My mother died August 14,2008. I know she is in heaven and finally not struggling to breathe. I know because of what she taught me about God. She was the best mom ever.
Mom had a way of getting her children to look into the scriptures. She used some very personalized translations of scripture.
Do you know where to find the verse she used to encourage us to sew well? Mom said "As ye sew, so shall ye rip." Her meaning being, sew well or you'll be ripping out your stitches. Now for Job 4:8 "As I have seen, they that sow iniquity, and sow trouble, shall ye reap the same." (ASV) That still says be careful what you do.
Another malaprop "Don't get scared;I'm coming with a quilt." Look up John 14:25-26

Someday you may get a new name too
Did you notice I skipped right over something in last month's story? Saul went to Antoich, but shortly after Paul walked on. Saul probably had letters of introduction for local officials, both political and religious to help him in his work of ridding the world of this new religious sect. He was a very well educated and respected man.
See first Isaiah 29:13 "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men."
Saul was a hypocrite and didn't realize it. His wonderful education was getting in the way of his understanding of who God was. God changed Saul's heart for a brand new one, and along with it he changed his name. Saul the respected Jew became Paul the Gentile. By changing his Jewish name to the Roman version Paul was announcing God's new covenant was with the entire world, not just the son's of Abraham. Here's a memory verse for you in the Contemporary English Version "Then other nations will turn to me and be my chosen ones. I, the Lord, say this." Acts 15:17. Since you've already read Saul/Paul's story, here are some people who's names were also changed. Try looking these names up to find their stories. Azariah, Hananiah and Mishael these are their original names. What were they changed to? There friend Beltashazzar is very famous by his Hebrew name. Why didn't his name change stick? So if you remember last month's story.God's people have really done themselves in.They told Jeremiah he was all wrong about God's advice; and off they went.
Well you and I probably haven't told off any prophets of God Almighty, but I'm sure we've all gone our own way without consulting God. What do you do when you realize your mistake?
One of my favorite stories is in Acts, about a man I believe thought he was doing God's work. You see, he was trying to get rid of this new religious sect. God really gives him a big heads up, you're going the wrong way! Check this one out in Acts 6:8-8:3 (Stephen's story) and then Acts 9:1-31 (Saul's story).
Here's a memory verse for you: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."Romans 8:28 KJV.The persecution of the church caused the word to spread throughout the world. The same zeal Paul had to destroy this new group, God used to attract and convert the gentiles.
Paul had an offering to God of a broken and contrite heart. That's the right "Oops, I

Well, let's see now, if someone told you to just sit and wait by the seaside while an army
came to attack you--You'd do it? If you were told to march around a city once a day till God tells you what to do next--You'd do it? You would follow Jesus out into the wilderness with no food and expect to be well fed by that boy's loaves and fishes--right?
Jeremiah is a big book so let's just read a portion, chapters 40-43. You'll be starting just after Babylon has taken over Jerusalem and all of Judah. The Babylonians have put a guy named Gedaliah in charge, but he is soon killed for his job by someone of royal descent.
That might not have been so bad if they didn't go ahead and kill all the Babylonian officials too.
Now the people are afraid and come to Jeremiah for advice; but even though they tell him they will do whatever he says God wants them to do; the people have already made up their minds. No way will they stay and trust in God's protection--Pharoah will protect them.
Your bible memory verse is found in Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you,says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." The Living Bible
Seek God's advice, but remember to take it. He knows more than anyone else. Just keep reading His word to stay in touch.

When man Connects with God
This month we celebrate the birthday of the church, Pentecost. Go to the Psalms chapter 110:1-4. When I read this it just seemed like God the father was saying "Come sit right here beside me Jesus, rest up a little. You've done a great job! Now let's watch and see what your disciples will do with this from here.
Wow does God ever know how to start things right! These men had been preparing for this moment for some time. Jesus had instructed them to gather and wait for the power of the Holy Spirit to come on them. You will find that in Acts 1:4 and 5. What sounded like it started as a quiet morning bible study went on to turn our whole world around!!
First there's the sound of a roaring wind, and then tongues of fire sitting on the head of each apostle. Next they spilled out into the street to tell the world of the New Covenant. A crowd of people has gathered because they heard roaring the wind. Some said they must be drunk; but then everyone in this huge crowd hears the message in his own language! There are 15 languages mentioned--all being heard by this crowd! Let us not forget these men were not highly educated or well travelled. This was certainly God's own hand in what occurred. Now if you haven't yet, check this story out in Acts chapter 2. Make sure I've gotten it right!
For memory verses I've found two from Romans 8:31 "What shall we say to these things?

Perfect Worship
The first Easter was far from a celebration! These men had been through a lot together.
Now the man who had called them away from their everyday lives, just a few years back, was gone. It was all over. Jesus was gone! Each one probably thought this would be one of the worst days of the rest of their lives. Jesus was gone!
The disciples didn't realize, Jesus had perfectly prepared them to worship God in spirit and in truth. At the last supper when Jesus said, "One of you will betray me."Each man asked "Is it I?" Matt. 26:17-24 or Luke 14:17-19. Here's your memory verse, advice from the Old Testament, Psalm 51:17 "You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Every disciple but Judas offered the perfect sacrifice. Jesus came to fix mankind. Unless we admit we are broken, He can't help.
But then the women came back with a wild story! Read Luke 24:1-12, Matthew 28 and John 20:1-18. Here's one of those places where they say there is a conflict. Read Mark 16:1-8.I'm sure women trembling with fear at what they had seen would cause the word to get out. The basic news is still the same. God's love is beyond our wildest dreams! Just keep on reading it!

This is a little something about 3 verses in Deuteronomy.
Here we go, from Deut. 6:5"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart with all your soul and with all your might." Jesus said this is the most important commandment. (Mark 12:28-34)How do we learn to love God? We need to know Him! "We love him because He first loved us."It says so in 1 John 4:19 I can tell you about the way God loved and corrected Moses, Joshua, David and Paul; but if you know me, I'd better tell about how God loves and corrects me too. Then maybe you can see what he is doing in your life. Next verse, Deut. 6:6 "These words which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart." I know Jesus died for my sins; That's what has written them on my heart. Deut. 6:7 "You shall teach them dilligently to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up." Was there any time that was left out? To face the world and it's challenges our children need to be filled up with God; and according to God's word this has always been true. Whether you are a parent or not the baptism ceremony charges all of us to be examples and supporters of children in their walk of faith. Just keep reading your bibles; look what I got out of only 3 verses!

"If God be for us who can be against us?"*
Well I know who; and he is busy with me right now! I'm just getting ready for the mission trip to Louisianna. Doubts and worries are popping up all over!
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." 1 Peter 5:8 NKJV As a sober vigilant person, I've called
on a few good trusted Christian friends, asked for their prayers and support, prayed; and now I'm ready for a walk through God's word.
Like a lot of Christians, I can come up with bible quotes that I've no idea where they're found.
I'm just pretty sure it's in there.Take the one at the top of this article. It was a hard one to find! You see even with my concordance (look it up by the words, Bible quote book); I couldn't find it. The key words-God,For, and Against are too common! Thank God for the internet--I put my little phrase into a Bible-on-line concordance and instantly had my answer.
So check it out by going to Romans 8:31, in fact you may want to read the entire chapter.
It's full of the reassurance I was in need of.

Do you know of any book besides the Bible that has chapters and numbered verses?
Whether it was God's idea or not we all use those verse numbers to remember a place in the Bible instead of just reading it. Let's face it this is a very big book. You'd waste a lot
of time just looking for a single verse without those numbers. They are what guides us to
the spot we're looking for--just like road names and house numbers on a map.
Strange thing when God's hand is in it, there are treasures to be found. Let's try exploring
some of the other 3:16's besides the one found in John. First go to 1 Cor. 3:16 "Don't you know that you are God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you?" That's like God is reminding us His work is in progress when we stumble. One that is more of a warning is James 3:16 "Where jealousy and selfishness are, there will be confusion and every kind of evil."We need to guard our hearts from these things.Another to try reading 1 John 3:16 "This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters."That's your 'What Would Jesus Do' in a nutshell. Your challenge
for this month is to learn all 3 of those verses and keep them straight. Remember to just
keep reading that Bible of yours even if it's just casually exploring. Pray first for God's
guidance.

One that is more of a warning is James 3:16 "Where jealousy and selfishness are, there will be confusion and every kind of evil."We need to guard our hearts from these things.Another to try reading 1 John 3:16 "This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters."That's your 'What Would Jesus Do' in a nutshell. Your challenge
for this month is to learn all 3 of those verses and keep them straight. Remember to just
keep reading that Bible of yours even if it's just casually exploring. Pray first for God's
guidance.
